Arizona CSPMP Integration FAQ

The Arizona State Board of Pharmacy's Controlled Substances Prescription Monitoring Program (CSPMP) provides prescribers and pharmacists with access to review information on controlled substance dispensing for their patients through their Electronic Health Records (EHR) or Pharmacy Dispensing software (PDS) systems.

As of October 16, 2017, a prescriber is required to review a patient’s CSPMP record before prescribing an opioid analgesic or benzodiazepine controlled substance listed in Schedules II, III, IV, or V per A.R.S. 36-2606. Dispensing pharmacists are required to check the patient record in the CSCSPMP when filling a schedule II controlled substance beginning April 26, 2018. To make the CSPMP process more efficient, the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy received funding to integrate the CSPMP directly into EHR and PDS systems statewide.

The main benefit of integration is efficiency. It enables prescribers or pharmacists to access a patient utilization report from the patient's record in their EHR or PDS software rather than having to log into the CSPMP through the AWARxE web portal and enter patient information manually. This makes the CSPMP more efficient and user-friendly.

To begin, create an account using the online Integration Interest Form. After you have submitted the form, a CSPMP representative will contact you for next steps.

Yes, accessing the CSPMP through the Gateway fulfills the requirement to register with the CSPMP as you need an account to use the Gateway integration program.

Integrating the CSPMP into an EHR or PDS software system is not mandatory, but it can enhance the efficiency of reviewing patient records. The AWARxE website, https://arizona.pmpaware.net/, is always available for reviewing a patient's CSPMP records before prescribing/dispensing a controlled substance.

We recommend reviewing your workflow to determine if integrating with the CSPMP is beneficial for your office or pharmacy. Through integration, you directly access the CSPMP using your EHR or PDS software, eliminating the need for a delegate. If you choose not to integrate, you can still access the CSPMP online on the AWARxE web portal.

***It's important to note that delegates should have their own account in the CSPMP and should not share accounts with their supervising prescriber or pharmacist.

Absolutely! At times, you may prefer using the Gateway for the quickest access, while other times you may choose to use the website. Your method of choice depends on your workflow. Additionally, there may be times when you need to access a state that shares data with the Arizona CSPMP, this may need to be done using the AWARxE web portal.

The State contracts with Bamboo Health to use its PMP Gateway® service to connect with Arizona’s CSPMP system.

More information is available on Bamboo’s website for Clearinghouse.

The agreement will cover the subscription to the Bamboo Health PMP Gateway® service.  A healthcare entity might encounter additional costs when working with their vendor to connect.
